2nd International SEARCH Conference 2011

The recently concluded 2nd International SEARCH Conference 2011 held at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus in Subang, Malaysia was declared a success by the participants and guests who came from many different countries. With the theme New Media Culture and Challenges, the conference became a platform for networking and exchange of knowledge among researchers, industry practitioners and students.

Two distinguished plenary speakers delivered their expertise in the fields of communication and linguistics. Associate Professor Terence Lee presented his lecture entitled Regulating Facebook: Governing Social Networks and New Media where he cited the need to implement firm regulation on the use of new media. Prof Theo van Leeuwen, on the other hand, spoke about the changing learning styles in the new media era and the importance of preserving knowledge to drive innovation.

Seventy three parallel sessions were lined-up during the two-day event, which gave all participants a chance to share, debate and collaborate on their own research interests. The blend of research findings from different nations and culture offered a perfect academic atmosphere to bring about awareness on the many different opportunities and issues that the media industry is now facing.

The SEARCH Committee looks forward to organizing a more interesting and exciting conference in 2013.

1st International SEARCH Conference 2009

The 1st International SEARCH Conference was held from 29-30 May 2009 at the Subang Sheraton Hotel, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.

This lively international conference focused on the impact of politics, ethics and ownership of media on society at both national and international levels and its consequences for theory, policy and practice in the area of communication.

We welcomed speakers and participants from Australia, Iran, Pakistan, the USA and Thailand, among others. As such the conference provided an international forum that not only brought together the latest academic and policy discussions but also promoted critical debate on the often complex interconnections between the study of communication and other disciplinary areas in humanities.

This conference proved to be the start of an exciting series of conferences that will see the coming together of communication experts in academia and the industry.
