Aligning the stars in East Los High: How authentic characters and storylines can translate into real-life changes through transmedia edutainment

Abstract:

The present article analyses the creative production processes and audience reception aspects of East Los High, an exemplary Hollywood-based edutainment initiative that purposely leveraged transmedia storytelling to address highly salient issues—teen pregnancy and reproductive health — for Latinx youth in the United States. We investigate how East Los High’s creative team and subjectmatter specialists aligned the transmedia narrative—comprising of an edutainment web series and nine digital extensions—with its social objectives. We do so by drawing on a treasure trove of data sources—personal interviews with the creators, writers, and executive producers of East Los High; archival analysis of various project materials; a web-based audience survey of 202 viewers with an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of responses to the open-ended questions. Our analysis suggests that the creative process to develop richly-textured characters and plot lines in East Los High was guided by an uncompromising attention to information accuracy and cultural authenticity and accomplished its purpose of being perceived as a programme by, of, and for Latinx Americans.

Ethical dilemmas of Filipino reporters during the 2016 Philippine presidential campaign trail: A phenomenology

Abstract:

Journalists play a vital role during an electoral campaign where their reporting on candidates help the voting public make well-informed decisions. However, their dealings with sources may place them in unfavourable situations where ethics are concerned. This phenomenological study intended to capture and examine the ethical dilemmas experienced by Filipino journalists who covered the trails of presidential candidates during the Philippines’ national elections of May 2016 that was eventually won by Philippine City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte. Data were collected through interviews with journalists from print, online and broadcast news organisations who were assigned to cover the five presidential candidates. Participants of the study were asked to narrate their experiences on the campaign trail, particularly those that challenged their ethical values as reporters. Results yielded the Wheel of Filipino Election Reporters’ Ethical Dilemmas model that classified and described these dilemmas thus providing valuable insights on the ethical dimensions of political journalism. Furthermore, these findings would enable political journalists to become more conscious of the moral and ethical dimensions of their work, given their crucial task as watchdogs of those who are in power.

Knowledge sharing dynamics among Dota 2 online gamers at Indonesian internet cafes

Abstract:

This study aimed to underpin the flow of gaming knowledge amongst online gamers in Indonesia. The findings were derived from the observations of 152 Dota 2 players in the cafes of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek), Indonesia. Specifically, this study intended to explore the motivation for players to share knowledge with fellow gamers, the knowledge sharing patterns used and the process involved in developing a skilled and cohesive team to play Dota 2. This study adopted an interpretive approach whereby research participants were observed and interviewed in their natural location. The results revealed that gamers share their gaming knowledge based on their closeness, trust and cooperation that were acquired through online and offline friendships to win games. Cultural differences were not obstacles to the process of knowledge sharing. The key factor is mutual respect between players where language becomes a bridge of communication among cross-cultural players. Since this is an interpretive study, that deployed purposive sampling in its data collection, the results of the study cannot be generalized for the gamer population in Indonesia.

The idea about Imperialism in Japanese animation films

Abstract:

This article explores the representation of war in Japanese animation films and its impact on society. This study advances the understanding of the portrayal of war in Japanese animation films as well as the role of animation films in depicting important historical events. The films selected are Barefoot Gen (Hadashi no Gen, 1983), Barefoot Gen 2 (Hadashi no Gen 2, 1986), Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka, 1988), Girl in Summer Dresses (Natsufuku no Shoujo-tachi, 1988), and Kayoko’s Diary – Who’s Left Behind (Ushiro no Shomen Daare, 1991). The examination of these films reveals the socio-political implications of war pertaining to the Japanese involvement in World War II. The findings show that the war atrocities perpetrated by the Imperial Japan are condemned by the strong portrayal of devastation and deprivation faced by innocent civilians on the home front. The article concludes that in addition to being a form of art, animation films also act as a social commentary and a medium to provoke positive social change in the society at large.

Najib Razak’s political storytelling on Instagram: The fall of a government and the rise of an opposition leader?

Abstract:

This study explores the dynamics of visual imageries on political communication focusing especially on the political storytelling of Najib Razak. Najib Razak is a contested figure in Malaysian politics. He was Malaysia’s 6th Prime Minister and the man responsible for the fall of a 60-year-old government. His dynamic political life offers an interesting case for this study. Image type analysis was carried out on 94 Instagram postings shared by Najib from March 2018 to January 2019. The results showed that Najib actively used Instagram to author his own stories by switching between narratives that were personal and political. These narratives depicted Najib as a resilient politician and a proletarian leader, an image he used to promote his political comeback. Instagram affords politicians a platform to engage in populist politics that celebrates the individual lives of politicians over strict political actions. However, this study argues that while populist politics may take the attention away from ideological issues that guide a politician’s actions and decisions, it still needs scholarly recognition as Instagram and other social media forms are now an inevitable part of political communication. Thus this analysis offers a crucial look at the mediatisation and personalisation of politics and contributes to the academic literature on social media, storytelling, as well as political communication in Malaysia.

Communicating insults in cyberbullying

Abstract:

Cyberbullying is basically bullying on electronic or social media. This form of bullying is often overlooked and yet it can be just as damaging as face-to-face bullying. This paper reports on a study of provocative insults used in online bullying among Malaysian youths. Important key words or phrases used by tertiary-level Malaysian students who have experienced cyberbullying, have bullied others or are merely bystanders in social media platforms are elicited. Data collection and analysis are conducted in two phases. The first involves a survey using the BuLI (Bashing using the Language of the Internet) questionnaire, and the second involves analysing streamed data from Twitter via the Twitter API and R statistical software using key terms derived from the first phase. Thematic analysis is employed in the second phase of the analysis where the keywords of each theme are subjected to qualitative interpretation based on the context where these words occurred in. Initial results point towards the indication of categories of insults related to intelligence, physical appearance and worthiness. The linguistic realisations used to communicate these insults are categories of a mixed code of Malay and English. This exhibited innovative and marked (unusual) words and phrases that have crept into the lexicon of online insults. The preferred terms used are also uniquely related to the concept of ‘face’ in the Malay culture.

A reflection on the stakeholder theory: Impact of the government policy

Abstract:

The Stakeholder Theory has been around since the 1984 and is one of the most crucial theories in discussing value creation and trade in the business world. This article is a reflection of the Stakeholder Theory in the context of Government policies. The focus of this research is to look at the Government Programme from the perspectives of Stakeholder Theory. The main firm would be the Government institution, whereas the stakeholders would be defined as people who are affected or have the power to affect the policy, and in this study, the professionals. Customers of the Government Transformation Programme are the public, especially eligible voters. Using the stakeholders theory, this research is a reflection of the Government policies and how it affects different segments of communities, as well as what are the steps taken by the Government to ensure that the Government policies are well received and well executed for the sake of its stakeholders. The study in its preliminary stage, has discovered that the different stakeholders perceived the Government policies success based on their proximity to the policy.
